Star Thistle (above two pictures) and Sweet Clover (below pictures) are some of the main summer honey crops in our area. They bloom all summer long. Golden Rod (pictures below) is one of the main Fall honey crops. The honeybees bring this sweet nectar back to the hives and concentrate it into honey

Putting honey supers on in July involves a lot of carrying boxes around. Adding the supers will give the honeybees a lot of room for them to store honey in. This is the last supering that I do before we start to harvest the honey in Mid August. The colonies can become quite tall at this time of the year, sometimes I need an extra box or two to stand on to reach the top. Occasionally they can become unstable and when I return in the fall I find some that the wind has blown over. Sometimes there is 200 to 300 lbs. of surplus honey on some of these large colonies. They are not always that strong, if I can average 100 lbs per colony I figure I am having a good year.

Christmas Greetings to All  from the

10^th Annual Denver Christkindl Market

     Come one, Come All! We are now open!

  The Denver Christkindl Market opened on Friday at 11:00am on its Premiere Day. The first day proved to be the most successful opening day for the Christmas Market in years. The entire evening was absolutely full of visitors out trying to get the first pick of the wares fresh in from Europe. Again we have our European and Coloradan Vendors offering German and European Gift Items, Foods, Breads, freshly baked, Glühwein and assorted German beers, German Chocolates, Meads, Honeys, Candles and much, much more. The market has grown 30% over last years in and size and the number of visitors has already grown proportionally.

 The Market is located at Skyline Park South on the 16^th Street Mall at the crossing of Arapahoe St. and between 15^th and 16^th street. The Christmas Market moved to this location last year on invitation of the City of Denver and in close cooperation with the Denver Downtown Partnership.

Dates for the market are:

 November 27 – December 24^th (one day longer than last year).

 Opening Times are:

 Sunday thru Wednesday            11:00am to 7:00pm

            Thursday thru Saturday              11:00am to 9:00pm

 The Denver Christkindlmarket is hosted by the German American Chamber of Commerce of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region and presented by the German Cultural Foundation, both organisations of which are there to promote the German Cultural Heritage in Colorado and to keep Colorado and the Region on the global economic map!

Upper Peninsula

I am taking a break from handmade soap making  to visit family, celebrate our anniversary and enjoy the lovely fall colors. Tim and I were married here on Oct 8th, 26 years ago. Anyways, the UP refers to the upper peninsula of Michigan (the pink color on the map indicates the UP)

The weather has been mostly cold and rainy with a little bit of sunshine here and there. Hopefully the trees will peak while I am here to see the beauty.

The sign said $2000! It looks like it sits on a lot and half. Tim went up and read the sign and it said something about $2000 down and then in smaller print it said it was a land contract of $200 a month and something about $9000.

Tim and Ben have been working hard constructing the new opening, first they framed in the footer, next they poured the footer, framed in the opening to accommodate the door. Yesterday they  trimmed the roof so it is ready for the roofers.  Monday the electrician will install outdoor lighting. The door should be installed in about 3 weeks along with new house windows and stucco. Stay tuned.

Sept 28, 2009- ready for electrical expection. That’s it till the middle of October.
